The LittleHippo Mella Ready To Rise alarm clock is incredibly popular! It is specifically designed to help teach your child when it is time to sleep and when it is time to wake up. It uses simple facial expressions and lights to do so.
We got this for my 3 year old son when he started getting out of his bed at 5:30 in the morning, ready for the day. Um, no. Not okay. I mean, if he was ready to be awake, that's fine, but mommy and daddy (especially mommy) still needed to sleep. Ain't nobody want to be around mommy when she hasn't gotten her sleep!
So we decided to give this clock a try. What happens is you set what time you want your kid to go to sleep and when they are allowed to come out of their room in the mornings. For us, we set our son's bedtime to 8:15. Right at 8:15, the clock would do this:
And it would stay like that the whole night. For the wake-up time we set it for 7:00. But at 6:30 it did this:
A yellow light turns on and that signaled to our kid that it was okay to play quietly. And once the clock turned green like this:
He knew it was okay to come out of his room!
Now let's talk pros:
- Has 6 different night light colors
- There are a few different sound options
- Optional alarm clock
- Timer for playtime or time-outs
- Has a child lock on there as well so they can't mess up the settings
-It's fun!
And the cons:
- You can't turn off the yellow light before the "awake" time (unless this has been updated since the one I used)
- The lights are a bit bright
I am going to say this to be honest. The clock works like a charm for my niece. I feel like my son is the exception in this case. It didn't work for him. He was too curious about watching for the clock to open and close its eyes. Granted, he would stay in his room until the light changed, but he was getting even less sleep than before. But most of the other reviews on this product are amazing. I wish it would have worked better for us. But most other kids I know that have used it have done awesome!
