I'm a parent who isn't big into letting my kids watch television/movies a lot. I usually only let them watch for 1 hour a day, if that. I prefer that they play, color, run around, get outside, etc.
Now don't get me wrong, I definitely have days where I need to use the tv more than I want to. I get it! Sometimes you just need the television to "babysit" them for a bit. So I'm totally not judging!
When I do let them watch something, I try to make sure they will actually learn something from whatever they watch. The following shows are the ones that I let my 3 year old (and 5 year old if he wants to) watch:
1. Super Simple Songs
I seriously can't tell you how much I love these guys! They do have a YouTube channel called Super Simple Songs - Kids Songs but I prefer to use my Amazon Prime account so I can avoid any ads in between.
They do nursery rhymes, counting, letters, dancing, opposites, and emotions. I actually just found on their website that they have a ton of free printables too! As I was scrolling through them I noticed that a lot of them can be used for older kids. You can check them out here.
I honestly think that my son knew his alphabet so fast because of these guys. They are my absolutely favorite!
2. Mother Goose Club
Mother Goose Club is known for doing fun nursery rhymes. The characters are fun and keep the kids engaged! They have their YouTube channel Mother Goose Club, but I just use Amazon Prime to avoid any ads.
3. Daniel Tiger
I absolutely love the Daniel Tiger shows! I truly feel like they teach kids about their emotions, sharing, adjusting to change, and how to be kind. Yes, I get the songs stuck in my head, but I can't tell you how many times those songs have helped my kids accomplish something.
I use PBS Kids or Amazon Prime. Neither one of those have ads.
4. CoComelon
Stop. Don't freak out that this is on my list! I know that a lot of parents complain about this showing driving them insane. But guess what? It isn't for parents! It's for kids! It does portray this unrealistically perfect family, but the songs really are educational. They range from the typical nursery rhymes and ABCs to songs about colors and eating healthy food. There is a clever song about using the potty and I have found it to be incredibly helpful recently.
I watch it on Amazon Prime to avoid any ads. But they have their YouTube channel as well.
5. Jack Hartmann Kids Music Channel
And last but definitely not least is this guy! Jack Hartmann has an amazing YouTube channel with sooooo many fun educational songs! This channel is one that my 5 year old (almost 6) loves as well. He has everything from the alphabet, counting in Spanish, learning sign language, months of the year, animals, and counting. The songs he does are original and so clever!
I hope that when you flip on that tv or other device for your kid to watch something, you go to one of these. They will be entertained AND learning! And you will get a nice break :)
